Building a xylophone.

Today I made two xylophones from paper and glass cups.

I put water in the glass cups so when I hit it it will make a different sound. I cut the paper in smaller pieces so when I hit it it will make different sounds.

when you hit the objects the sound vibrates in it to make sound.

below shows 2 videos of me hitting the objects.

Te reo Maori

Today for SLJ we worked on te reo Maori.

first we had to fix the gaps that spell (What are you doing today) in Maori and then it says what are you doing and have to fill the gaps in and lastly we get to answer the same question but at the end was my choice to choose.

Below is a google slide showing what I did.

Optical Illusions

Today for SLJ I worked on making Optical Illusions.

Optical Illusions are geometric pictures or patterns that are mainly coloured in black or white. We were suppose to make our own optical Illusion.

Below shows an Optical Illusion I made and coloured it in black and white.

Kowhaiwhai Pattern

Today for SLJ worked on making a Kowhaiwhai pattern.

We had to copy and paste the Kowhaiwhai pattern repeatedly so it could make a pattern. After that you could change the background to colours that you think represents a tanerore or a colour that represents the summer.

Below is a picture of my creation of the Kowhaiwhai pattern.

Commenting

Today I blogged on Ahli's blog for SLJ.

I commented on his Insect Art blog post and I liked his blog, I was also impressed on how well done he has done his art

Insect Art

Today this task for SLJ is Insect Art.

First we watched a video showing an artist making insects from leave's, twigs and other thing in nature.
I made my insect from 8 twigs, 4 small spiky leaves, 1 tiny pine cone, and 1 empty nut shell.

The insect I made was a spider and the materials took a lot of time to get.

Fishing False Teeth | Summer Learning Journey

Today for SLJ I was doing a task called fishing false teeth.

First I got to read an article about fishing false teeth and after was a template showing characters in the book and showed who they are and what part they play in the story.

Inquiry

This week we were doing our Resource requisition, shelter materials.

First we figured out what materials we needed to make our shelter outside ls1. We thought of Wool, Plaster, Clay bricks and Aluminum cans. The cans hold up our roof so it won’t collapse the clay bricks to make our shelter wool take a while to burn so my group and I chose wool.

Then the layers of the structure had clay on the outside layer, aluminium cans on the inside layer, the wool will be on the inside of the aluminium cans and the plaster of paris is to hold the materials together.

After my group and I corrected our shelter materials and model with Mr Wong we finished and got our materials.

Not most materials can protect against natural disasters.

Touch Rugby

We continued with practicing 3 man settle and 2 man settle with Coach Mark.

First we practised 2 and 3 man settles to get ready for a game of touch. Coach Mark told us to aim for one person when we drive the ball down the field.

Next we played a game of touch. The game was for learning how to play and how to use a 2 and 3 man settle.

I enjoyed the 2 man settle and the game of touch but I need to get better at 3 man settle so I won't get confused on who the person will pass the ball to.

Emergency shelter | Inquiry

This week, our company (Global Savers) brainstormed ideas for an emergency shelter design.  We needed to think of a main shape and design of the emergency shelter.  We also needed to think about what our shelter will be designed to resist.

My group used a design programme called SketchUp, that allows people to design and create anything they want in three dimensions.

We chose to use a hexagon shape to make this model Me and my group chose this shape because it seems like a very strong shape.

We made the walls thick so it could keep people inside of it safe.  We would make the shape tall so incase of an emergency we could fit quite a few people in there.

Touch Rugby | Kiwi Sport

Today for Touch rugby we learnt the skills on how to play the game.

The first skill planting the ball. We had to place the ball between our legs so when we plant the ball we step over the it and let the other person get it.

Second we learnt passing the ball and planting the ball in different cones. My partner I worked with was suppose to pick put the ball and pass it to me to plant it to another cone.

Lastly we did Defending and Attacking. Defending and Attacking were 2 teams. One team was the defender and one team was the attacker. The attacker was suppose to hold the ball and get it to the other side without getting touched and defender was suppose to stop the attacker from getting the ball to the other side.

I enjoyed this activity because it teaches me how to learn the basic skills of touch rugby.

Division story problem

For math I learnt how to use division.

I shared the number evenly among how many groups there were.
For example. I got 2 objects and shared them evenly among 2 groups.
I gave them 1 object each and wrote the algorithm. 2 ÷ 2 = 1.

I enjoyed this activity because it teaches me how to divide numbers.

Kupu

For Maori our work was called kupu.

The kupu task was about translating Maori words into English words.

For example, tama is Maori for boy, and whenua is Maori for land.

We also worked on writing the daily routine in Maori and had to translate Maori words from a Maori song to English words to understand it more better.

I enjoyed this activity because I understand new Maori words easier

Touch Rugby

Today we learned some basic skills for touch rugby.

First we learned how to tap the ball, catch, and pass the ball.

Afterwards we played passing drills to get better at committing to the ball and catching.

I enjoyed this activity because we learned basic touch skills.

Te Tinana

This week for Te Reo Maori we did a task about our body called Te Tinana.

We worked on how to say different body parts.  For example puku means stomach and ngutu means lip.

We highlighted the body parts we knew in blue and the ones we didn't know were left blank .

We had to match the Maori words with the English words.

Before the Te Tinana activity we had to match Maori words with different pictures that were showing different weathers.

This helps us learn more Maori words easier

Friday 25 September 2020

Mixed word problem

This week I learnt how to use brackets for math.

First there were word problems that we had to finish. When we wrote the answer we had to use brackets to tell the reader we are doing that equation first.

Lastly I wrote the amount as a sentence.

L.I to write word problems in order using brackets.

Safety plan

For inquiry we checked out the hazards, risk, and consequences that could happen during making a fire and smores.

First, we discussed different hazards and risks. Next we wrote it down. A hazard for the fire is the fire itself and the consequences are getting burnt.

Then, we discussed some consequences that could happen. Consequences can be how can we prevent it, whose responsibility is it, and the emergency plan.

Mr Ogilvie lit up the fire and then demonstrated how to roast the marshmallows. After he demonstrated we made our own smores.

After, we made another safety plan for making the smores with the fire. We repeated the same process but wrote down different hazards, risks and consequences. Then we made smores.

Making connection

LI-To identify and describe connections.

Connections are similar and relate to text to self, text to text, text to world.

Text to Self relates to actions between the book and the yourself. For example
the mouse is confident to the Grufallo. My connection is I am confident to the teacher when I show feedback.

Text to Text relates to action from the book to another book. For example the mouse tries to get out of being eaten. My connection is the gingerbread man runs away to get out of being eaten.

Text to World relates to the actions between the book and whats happening in the world. For example
The mother squirrel collects food for her children. My connection is mothers in the world go to the shops to collect food to feed their children.

These 3 things help people to understand what they are reading.

Setting description

A setting description describes what a place looks ,smells, feels, sound like.

When describing the look of something people use adjectives like: yellow, shiny and more.

To describe the feeling of something people use adjectives like: cold, damp, jagged and more. This helps people to understand the feeling of something.

To describe the smell people use adjectives like: mud, fresh and more. This helps people to understand the scent of something.

When describing the sound of something people use adjectives like: fast, quick and more.

A setting description helps people to link to that setting is because more information is covered about that setting.

L.I to write a setting description.

Risk & Hazards

L.I: to assess the likelihood

This week we were learning about hazards and risk.

First we had to give each situation a number that relates to low, likely, possible, elevated, extreme risk.

Second we wrote consequences to go with the situatioan. Consequences are something that results from the situasituation.
Our group discuss the risk if it was low, likely, or extreme risk.t

Multiplication word problems and coding

For math I learned how to make multiplication word problems.
First I made stories for the multiplication word problems. I used the group size and the number of groups to make the stories. Second I coded the answers to say incorrect or correct. Last I wrote the answer to see if the coding worked.
L.I to identify and solve multiplication word problems

Hazards & Risks

L.I to demonstrate prior knowledge.

My group learnt how to identify risks and hazards.

First, we discussed what hazards and risks are.  Hazards are something that can be used to cause injuries or pain, and risks are the possibility that something will happen to cause harm or pain.

Then, We focused on finding four hazards at home, four hazards at school, four hazards in sport and four hazards in our community.

After that, we worked on identifying the risks that the hazards cause.  We put our understanding of each risk and hazard into a google slide.

The google slide shows what the hazard is and the risks that the hazard can cause.  The hazards that we put for school are:Bookshelf, Glue gun, Being late, Not completing work, and some others.

The purpose of this activity is to understand the risks that hazards can cause.

Character Descriptions

Character descriptions describe the character. There are three areas to cover in a character description, personality, appearance, and experience.

The appearance describes the face and hair, the body, the clothes.
The experience describes where they live, their friends, interest, hobbies, talents, secrets, and achievements.
The personality describes what kind of person they are, how they behave, what they say, what makes them interesting and different.
The character description uses figurative and literal language. This activity helps people to write a character description using the appearance, experience and personality.
L.I to write a Character Description.

Swimming

For our swimming session the year 5 had to go to swimming groups we went last year. We went to each of our swimming groups.

Our coach was called coach James. He taught us how to float instead of sinking or drowning.
I had to put my body's flat so we can float.

If we put our head up while we float we sink.
I also got taught how to swim faster and kick with our legs.

I used a swimming technique called the dolphin. I had to point my hands above my ears and when I jumped in the water I had to put my legs together and kick.

I used another technique called the frog kick. I had kick my feet and swim down to the other side.

After I jumped off the platform

we had to high five his hand and we had to get out of the pool

Multiplication

L.I Learn about times table.
Multiplication is an easy way to count the same number in other ways. For example 7+7+7+7+7+7 is counting 7 six's that is 7 x 6 = 42

Explain idioms

Simple sentence

L.I: To show an increasing knowledge of how a range of text conventions can be used appropriately

This week my class and I practice creating a simple sentence. We had to visualise each picture and make a simple sentences. A simple sentence is 1 complete thought. This is an example: "He nearly caught the ball.". That is a simple sentence because its explaining about what he did.

Visualising

Visualising is drawing a picture map, mind map, or infographic about text that is difficult to understand.

To visualise a difficult sentence, break it up into parts and then draw each part.

If there is a word that you dont know they should be looked up in the dictionary. Children dictionaries are best s for learners. Visualising is a good way to easily understand difficult texts.
